THE BEAST AND
COLORADO SPRINGS - AUGUST 18, 1968
Below are five pages from The Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph, a weekly newspaper. We'd like to thank Tony Spicola very much for contributing these to the site. Click on each page to enlarge. Then click on the enlarged page for the clearest scan and easiest reading.
The first page is from August 17th and is mainly written about The Who.
This is Keith Moon on the front cover of the following week's issue from August 24th.
This page contains photos and a small caption about The Who. It also mentions this performance broke the record for attendance at an indoor concert in the state of Colorado at the time, with Kelker Junction being billed as the largest 3.2 bar in the country. Bob comments on the photo above:
Check out the one picture of The Who onstage showing the crowd in front of the stage. If you look hard, you can see Mike Kearns ("The Beard" our sax/flute player) to the right immediately offstage-I'm above him to the right a little in a silver satin shirt. That's where I got pieces of his Gibson SG Standard guitar as he chewed gum.
good times, good times
More of Bob's comments on the show can be seen on the Beast page.
This page has a photo of Roger Daltrey, and a photo of a couple checking out the psychedelic corner of Kelker Junction. The article on Beast begins here, and it mentions that a group called Noble and the Matadors also performed on this night.
article continues, and also includes 2 more photos.
Thanks again Tony for some great additions to the site!
